Is there a way to block that particular forum? If there is, will someone please tell me how. I’m getting tired of wading through the non-shop stuff to get to the good stuff.

Thanks

Hello Betty,

I use the Pulse feature to read the postings here and the off topic post are labelled as off topic and you have to actively select the to see the topic. The way Martin has set this up I never need to even see the titles of stuff I don’t want/need to see.

Hope this helps

Mark

Betsy,
What Mark said.

Go to the Pulse section and near the top of the page, rite side next to the search box, click on the “hide off-topic titles”.
The pulse will list these as “Off Topic” so you can ignore them if you want. You can also filter by other fields there as well.

we had tried keeping it off the rest of the site but it wreaked havoc on the server and it had to go back in the mix.

I myself am getting tired of seeing nearly half the threads on the first page be off-topic. Sorry, it’s just excessive. I understand the point in having the off-topic forum, but IMHO it has gotten out of hand with some of the total crap that has been posted over there anyway.

My opinion is that it’s something that doesn’t belong. This should be first and foremost a woodworking forum.

I see them as “off-topic” myself, but there are far too many off-topic posts to wade though. If it continues, I plan to leave. I doubt anyone cares, really. But I figure I’ll state my piece anyway.

Kenny,
Now you have posted something I agree with… Eliminate the Non-Shop-Talk Forum. I have rethought that idea and I DO AGREE WITH KENNY that ALL NON-SHOP-TALK be eliminated.

Just do it.

The only alternative might be admin selected specific forums such as “family”, “general photo sharing”, etc.

Didn’t we already do that?..... a.k.a. Coffee Lounge (R.I.P.) ..... (but the Coffee Lounge had two rules – no religion and no politics. Sure was a lot of good jokes though).

Thanks for the help. It’s nice not seeing the off-topic posts. Woodworking rules!

I didn’t look at non-shop forums for a long time, and finally, temptation got to me. I was just curious and look what kind of trouble it got me in to. Everybody ganged up on me an said some very mean things. Now I have to hang my head in shame, I’m afraid it will happen again. My blood pressure is up, I can’t eat, I can’t sleep at night, I had to put my shrink on speed dial, in case I need emergency counselling, now I’m on four different anti-depressants, we’re discussing in house treatment facilities right now, How will I pay my bills from rehab? If this abuse continues… But seriously folks, Isn’t being at the top of the page a sign of popularity. After all, this one just went to the top again. It happens every time someone makes a comment. If people wanted to talk only about woodworking, I’d have to wade through page after page of tools, and finishing, and wood, but no, it’s always right at the top because people keep watching, and commenting. They say they hate it but, some of the most popular shows on TV feature a bunch rude obnoxious people that no one can stand, but people tune in every week just to see what they can gripe about next, rather than just change channels. On TV, viewers start leaving, ratings drop, advertisers pull out, amd the show gets cancelled. If you don’t want non-shop talk forums on the front page, just stay out of them, most will die off soon enough. Starting your own thread to complain, probably won’t help. If any of you are so innocent that you are truly offended by a few dirty words, you may need to get out more. You’ve lived a very sheltered life.

You can also look at that little picture on the left, it’ll usually give you an idea what you’re in for. I’m actually trying to play nice for awhile, We’ll see how that goes. I didn’t mean to offend you, but if you are overly sensitive, I recommend staying away from me. I’m really a pretty nice guy, but I tend to say rude things even when I’m not harassing some idiot.

Some of you people are like a virus, you infect every new forum started just to talk about each other. Everyone knows who you are, including yourself. Why don’t you guys start your own website so you can bag on each other without intruding on others. I’m sure I’ll get heat from you guys about it, But I expect to anyway, because thats what you do best, try to belittle everyone to make yourself feel better. Try growing up a little.
Your turn. Show your true colors.

It certainly is a non-shop talk forum now. I started this thread with a simple question. Two people answered my question and I was happy. Then it was highjacked.

I don’t start forums to be highjacked by others and its uncalled for. Makes me not want to ask questions or contribute at all for fear of a few people who can’t seem to leave a thread alone.

This is the last entry I will make on this post. But my final say is IF YOUR ANSWER/RESPONSE IS NOT ON THE TOPIC OF THE ORIGINAL THREAD – STAY OUT!
