Hello Cecilia, Congratulations on placing in the Golden Hammer Competition. What was your entry, and who won first place? I’d been involved in that in the past, and thought they’d discontinued the competition. Is it new again this year, or have they been holding it for while?
Glad to see you here on Lumberjocks; Welcome.

Hey Barb :-)

Thank you…The Golden Hammer Competition has been going on for years here in New York City. This years competition is on April 4th. In the past, There were 2 tests that the General Carpenter Apprentices had to take. Now we get to choose which one, either Interior Systems or Carpentry or go ahead and take both exams. I guess ‘cuz things changed up and now we have to “test out” as well…meaning build something from start to finish from a print to become Journeyman. I did both and scored in the top 8 out of 212 people so I had to choose one. Figured since I did most of my apprencticeship in Interiors I should test myself on how well I can do it alone. I’m the only girl….but we have 3 ladies competing in Carpentry :-) Only the top person gets to do Nationals.

that’s great cecilia

you stuck it out
and it’s working

i wanted to be a carpenter/woodworker most of my youth
never could get work as i had no ‘experience’
finally landed in a federal pen and fought tooth and nail
to be in the building trades class and got a degree
on my first real job some sleaze came in with diamonds on
and demanded everyone join his union
the owner gave him $100 for 4 guys and he went away
we never heard another word

years later i was in hawaii and on a lark
went into the union offices and took the test
they called california and found i had registered there
passed with 2 wrong answers to their amazement
they put my name on a list and i never heard a word from them either
that was 45 years ago
i’m probably still waiting

congratulations and welcome to LJ’s

Well, thanks for explaining your competition! Obviously not the same ‘Golden Hammer’ writing awards I was thinking of. Sounds like you done yourself proud! Good for you. Keep us informed of the April test. It sounds like a pressure cooker. I hope you do great!

Wow! Have not been on here for a couple of days…Thanks everyone :-)

@ David, seems like you still went ahead and persued your passion.
Sorry to hear it didn’t work out the way it should have. Many changes have
come and alot of weeding out the bad apples.

Good for you Cecilia. My older sister was a carpenter for 18 years, and a darn good one. The old boys gave her a hard time in the beginning, but she gave it right back, and her work backed her up. Have a lot of respect for my sis. And the weather has been great.
