Hey lumberjocks, I am new to the site but I have been reading yals reviews and looking at your projects as well. You guys have some great projects. I am just a hobbiest woodworker and new to it at that, I have been looking at the grizzly 6 inch jointer and just wanted to get some feedback on it. Any help is appreciated.

College woodworker,

Most people will tell you life can’t be fully lived without am 8” jointer minimum; preferably one that is nuclear powered and equipped with a Vulcan Mind Meld Port. Truth is, a six inch is fine—depending on what you are doing, and most six-inchers are fine if you know how to use them. As they are not in the rocket surgery catagory of equipment, look for the least expensive machine you can find with reasonable power (1/2 to 1 HP), straight, flat tables, and three blade cutterheads are nice. They are not a finishing machine, so don’t look for bells and whistles like spiral heads or indexable caRBIDE cutters unless you will be using incrediably expensive interlocked woods.

Jointers are simple, and do one simple job well; if you understand what it is and how to do it.

Look on craig’s list, check Harbor Freight (Gasp! It is good stuff) and get a nice entry level (HF 30289 6” may be had for about $240 with a 20% off coupon. I have had this one for better than five years and no disappointments. Well made, easily assembled and tweaked, powerful, and well made for about half the price of others. Check it out ot the 7” version. And welcome to LJs

What model # are you looking at.? They have more than one current new one, and have had several past models.

thanks for responses guys, i am looking at the G0654 but the G0452 is their best seller so i started comparing them and the only difference is the bases. the 0452 has a solid cabinet while the 0654 is peiced in the corners. only about $75 dollars difference but that would pretty much pay the shipping. fussy, i have looked at the HF one also, i am just leary of some of their stuff sometimes but I have heard good reviews on severl of their prodeucts as well. Thanks again guys, Mark
