I heard that Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offered one of the best quotes about our country’s debt ceiling:

“I could end the deficit in 5 minutes,” he told CNBC. “You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress – regardless of party affiliation – are ineligible for re-election.

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 – before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land – all because of public pressure. Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around to everyone. WE THE PEOPLE must act on this together and get Congress on the right track.
Congressional Reform Act of 2011 _

1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they’re out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay may be raised by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void retroactive as of 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women. Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. Our Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person sends this proposal to a minimum of twenty people, it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don’t you think it’s time WE THE PEOPLE turn the pressure on to get this done and set Congress on the right track? Through the years, they gradually got us into the mess we’re in now. Changes to status quo is now mandatory if we were to restore America to its former glory and our way of life.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!
If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, you know what to do. You are one of my 20+. Please keep it going, and thanks.

I agreed to this when it started…
... and I still like it…

For those that think it didn’t happen, here is a report that says it IS TRUE.

Thanx for your input, Dennis. I understand.
I wasn’t all sure about this “Amendment” whether it really originated from WB. Good to know, Joe. Thanx.

I understand that the quote from Mr. Buffet may be true, but the rest is “MOSTLY FALSE”, according to Snopes.com. You can read their report at http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/28thamendment.asp

I am sure glad that some of our fellow LJs are knowledgeable on these matters to set the record straight. Thanx JD. I went to the links you provided and I am glad some of those are false. When I firs read it, I thought “how could we have allowed all these to happen? Are we that stupid?” Regardless, I still think the core of the proposed “Amendment” is a step in the right direction, IMHO. I wish there’s someone who has the wherewithall to get it started and follow through until it becomes reality.

I like it but disagree with #1 and see major problems with #7.

I think that #3 purchasing a retirement plan/401K type is a good way to go – where #1 says no tenure no pension – it seems that even with a 2 term limit in the senate that is 12 years of no acrued retirement…seems unmanageable – but a typical 401K at Vanguard/T-Rowe Price etc, that has a 5% match should suffice.

#7 voiding all contracts – is just not possible, retroactive things can’t make it through the courts – but we certainly should set our course moving forward.
Even worse would be to do this in the constitution – look at the use of the commerce clause to codify Obamacare as interstate commerce… Imagine a CONSTITUTIONAL authority to retroactively void contracts :-P

A Perfect Example of the Harm the EPA is doing EVERYDAY!

IMHO, it should be removed… The tail is wagging the dog…
