First things first, I’ve just joined and want to say hello to all and thanks for the welcome emails. Now on to the point, I just bought a very large lot of shaper knives online and there are some knives of a type I’ve never seen. They look more like a router bit than a shaper knife but without the round shaft.
It seems they would need to mount in a head of some sort. Maybe someone out there can clue me in on this one. I’m attaching one picture but have more if anyone needs them.

There are some that mount in a molder head kinda like on a jointer or planer. The most comman type are the ones that look similar to a very large router bit with a hole bored in the middle.
The one you have pictured looks like it mounts in a head of osme sort. I have never seen one with the profile on both sides though.

The holder would look like a shaft with a slot in it. I saw one similar in a film clip someone posted somewhere for a training school in France from maybe in the 1920’s or 1930’s.

The slotted spindle looks like it could work with a nut to lock the cutter into the spindle. I have cutters that are from1/8” up to 3/8”, so guess I would need a spindle for each thickness. It doesn’t sound like something you could just pick up anywhere, may be time to fire up the metal lathe.

Have your say...
