I just had my carport rebuilt which we lost in a hurricane a few years ago. The braces on one side are 6×6’s, and in the middle they are 2” round steel posts. My question is how can I decorate these and make it look good. It is not a huge house so colums may look out of place. It’s also an old house.

Post a picture of what you have if you can.

I’ll wait for pics, but my first thought was to suggest that they be cased.

Bill has a good idea about casing the poles. This is easily done by using some 2x material to frame the steel posts and then cover them with material similar to the house siding or trim. I did something similar to this last summer. While I was working and thinking about the project I looked around the neighborhood for ideas that I could incorporate into my project. It was a bit surprising what you will see once you start looking. Good luck.

My thoughts:
I would router the four edges on the 6×6’s with a rounding bit. Only on the post that faces the street cut three 1/2” flutest. Paint the posts to match color of house. I would put vinyl sideing on top at front to lower the opening. The steel posts I would enclose with casing like above mentioned. Make the casing so it is same size as your outside posts 6”x6”.
A bit of paint, a bit of siding and a few 1×6’s and it would look nice.
