Once again scorecardresearch...

I wrote to ScoreCard Research raising this issue.
No reply.

I have now written to Escalate Media to see if anyone is actually in there.
I have filed a complaint against ScoreCard Research with TRUSTe (http://www.truste.com), since they proudly trumpet that they are members of said organisation.

I actually have no idea what that is from. I’ll do some research though.

It could very well be that this is happening unbeknown to you.
I don’t have a problem with collecting stats (well, I do, but I’m pragmatic and I realise it has to be done).
There are 2 problems…

1) If ComScore want to collect data then fine. BUT if they’re going to trumpet the fact that they are user friendly, and say (on scorecardresearch’s site) that sites using the system must tell us, and give us the chance to opt out, then that has to happen. If Kontera uses scorecardresearch then THEY must surely assume those responsilities too. As a member of TRUSTe they have obligations. I also, personally, don’t think it’s very “user friendly” of them to simply ignore my complaint.
2) When scorecardresearch is down, which seems to be fairly often – pages never finish loading.

Well, that’s one thing that’s throwing me off. The ad your referring to only shows up for guests or at least that’s the way it should be working. Are you seeing those ads while logged in? I was trouble shooting from the perspective of a signed in member.

Second, each Kontera ad has a link to ad choices here: http://www.kontera.com/ad-choices
From that page you can opt out of tracking and even disable Kontera ads all together.

Either way, we DO NOT use scorecard research ourselves and didn’t know it was coming in through a third party either. The only tracking we use is Google Analytics.

If you have issues with the technical aspects of the site, ads, or odd questions like this one feel free to PM me and I’ll always respond ASAP.

Are you seeing those ads while logged in?
I don’t see ads since I have them blocked.
I do see attempts to contact scorecardresearch whilst logged in.

I have a ticket in with a different ad network asking if they use the service. They said they didn’t but they were looking into it to make sure none of the ads they are serving have it embedded.

Sometimes this stuff gets hard to track down.

When you are logged in is the attempt to contact scorecardresearch coming through Kontera or can you tell?

Not sure if this will help at all but I have an IP Address Info. piece of software on here. I did a Capture on their results and it’s as follows.

I also did a “Who Is” trace. As follows:

EDIT: I also have a “Window Washer” on here that “Washes” MEGA Amounts of cookies, temp, history etc. that NO Browser will even touch. This first group is what I call the “Sneaky Ones” they are Numbers only. But they ALL came from here.

Same Program under “Temporary Internet Files” but identified as “Cookies” The Order is “Random”. There was a LOT more but couldn’t get it all on one Capture.

Funny you should ask.
I wrote to TRUSTe.
I wrote to them again, since they ignored my first complaint.
I got a whole load of “we are analysing…” replies.
On July 18th I got an email including… ”The site you reported to TRUSTe and has responded to your complaint regarding additional changes they will be implementing”
We didn’t, of course, need any additional changes, just for them to do what they said they were already doing.

2 minutes ago I unblocked scorecardresearch and, guess what – pages on this site are still hitting their servers, completely in violation of their, and TRUSTe’s, policies.

scorecardresearch themselves, of course, did not deign to answer any of my emails. They still proudly display their “TRUSTe certified privacy” badge on their web site.

TRUSTe said it did – they have closed the “problem” on their system.

Nope. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
Four months gone – no change.

What can be done?
Well, it appears, nothing – as seems to me to be somewhat common in this day and age, nobody gives a damn.
People can say whatever they like on their web sites, set up “certified whatever they like” programmes – it all looks very good and efficient and trustworthy – and it all means about as much as the paper it’s not printed on.

I received a notice from TRUSTe that “An update to ScorecardResearch’s privacy policy will go live on Thursday, September 13.”

Post edited – seeking clarification.

I read the wrong page, and thought that they had removed the line requiring there to be a notice.
Within a few minutes, I received a notification from TRUSTe that “Mr XXX is incorrect; we have not removed any text in response to the TRUSTe inquiry. The text he references is clearly visible at http://www.scorecardresearch.com/privacy.aspx“

They are so very proud of that notice.
Trouble is – this site does not have a notice and never has!
I have asked them ”...please tell me what you are doing to REQUIRE lumberjocks.com to include the notice?”
This has, of course, been going on for over 200 days now, so I’m not holding my breath (but I am blocking scorecardresearch)
