I have seen several posts and reveiws regarding the Grizzly G0716 10” drum sander, but nobody has mentioned whether or not you can remove the support plate located on the open end of the drum. I spoke with a Grizzly rep. on the phone and he said it was not recommended. However, this sander looks to be built just like the Jet/Performax sanders and it looks like it would work to remove the plate to sand up to 20” boards. Has anyone tried doing this, and if so, how were the results? I really want to buy this sander, but if it doesn’t work to remove the support plate, I don’t want to get it since I want to be able to sand boards wider than 10”. Please help!

I’m considering the Grizzly G0716 as well and have the same question regarding removing the bracket to achieve the 20” width. Any update on this possibility? It looks like a replacement bracket can be fabricated (e.g., C-shaped barcket allowing for a deeper thoat or something similar) if the removal of the bracket affects the operation.

There is an older review on this forum with a recent update. Look for the review. He said to stay clear of this sander. I also spoke with grizzly and they said the plate is not supposed to be removed. I finally found a used performax 16×32 sander with outfeed tables and stand for $400. 10” is not enough to allow for a glued up panel, which is the biggest use for a drum sander. The price is tempting, just be patient and check the local classifieds.

Thanks for the update. The Grizzly G0716’s 10” max width is not enough for my needs. I’ve been considering the Performax/Jet 10-20 or preferably the 16-32. They both seem to get mostly positive reviews, but the prices (for new) are higher than I want to go. Since I’m in no rush, I’ll wait. Your used 16-32 for $400 sounds like a great deal. Good luck with it!
