After looking into a bunch of dust collection systems and various ideas, I settled on the following, which seems to be a good, cost efficient, way to go. I bought a Harbor Freight 2hp collector ($189), a Wynn cartridge filter – 35A274NANO (.5micron) ($168), and I built a top hat separator as built and described on YouTube by a guy named Ghostses ( a very good 5-piece video). This system seems equal to a high priced system, like Jet’s cartridge collector, but at half the price.

On the HF collector, I intend to reduce in length the three tubes that support the collector ring and cartridge filter, and reduce the clear bag height by about half. The top hat separator will eliminate the need for such a large clear bag. This will permit me to place the entire HF collector in a shorter space.

Good choice. If you didn’t buy it yet, go get a woodworking magazine at the book store. (Wood magazine or one of the others). Look through it until you find one that has the Harbor Freight coupons. There’s almost always a dust collector coupon for $139 (I think).

I have that collector and like it very much.

Yeah, they increased the price to $149 with the Wood magazine coupon, but still a heck of a deal. Some times you can get them to take the 20% off and the coupon. Depends on the store.

If you search the internet and the woodworking magazines you can sometimes find a 30-40% off coupon. That collector goes on sale every couple months for $170 or something like that. And you can always use the coupons with sale priced items. So you can take30- 40% off the sale price. That’s how I bought mine!
