Hey all~

I’m doing some research on Woodworking Hand Tools. There seems to be a plethora of varying quality, price and brands out there from Japanese carving tools to Crown Tools to GRIP products and store brands.

I’m specifically looking for carving hand tools and turning knives ~
1. What do you use for carving?
2. What brands do you prefer?
3. Is it a specific ergonomic preference depending upon your hand size and shape?

Thanks for any input ~

I really like my Flex Cut knives and palm gouges. They stay sharp with very little stropping. I don’t have a set of their full size gouges but will eventually buy a set.

I gorgot to give you a link http://www.flexcut.com/
My personal favorites are the skew gouges in the palm size. I also have their JKN91 Carvin’ Jack
whick is a really neat little package to carry in your pocket or tool apron.

Hi Jude;

Good to see you posting.

I personally like Ashley Isles carving tools, and have quite a collection of them. (somewhere over a hundred).

I have come across some Japanese carving tools that I’ll soon be adding to my collection. Very high quality tools.

As for wood chisels and hand saws, I am a big fan of Japanese tools, and have several sets of those as well.

They are fantastic in quality, and hold an edge like no other tools I’ve used.

I have a set of Crown skews, they seem to be made from good steel and are tempered about right for my taste( i’m guessing 60 to 61) so they take a good edge. my only gripe would be when they polished them, they rolled the edges slightly and it did require alittle work to get a clean edge, but I wouldn’t hesitate to get another set. Also they seem to handle the salty air here very well, which is a big plus for me.
