Topic tags/keywords: jointer

i just got this from craigslist.

original owner, he bought it in 2001. i got it for $150. i’m stoked on what i think was a good deal, and it’s very timely since i have a LOT of rough cut cedar i put through the bandsaw to joint and plane.

two questions..

1 – i think it vibrates a bit more than is should. i plan on putting it on a rubber mat, what else would help?

2 – the fence is locked at 90 just fit, BUT on the outfeed side it JUST misses touching the outfeed table so it rattles a little bit. it’s mostly just annoying and i clamp it down. any ideas on solution? anyone with similar problems.

thanks!

Id check the alignment of your pulleys, they should be coplaner, ive used a plumb bob to align the pulleys on my bandsaw with good success. You alos might want to change the belt out that could cause some vibrations.

$150 is a steal for that jointer so let me be the first to say … YOU SUCK!

Chrisstefhit on the likeliest causes of vibration. Consider swapping the belt out for a link belt, especially if you’ll be using the machine infrequently, as they don’t take on a set like regular v-belts.

Also, you most definitely suck!!

I bought an older model of the same awhile back. I noticed that it bogged down when joining a face. On inspection the key was missing from the keyway of the upper pulley. I agree, check the pulleys and make sure they are secured in place.

for vibration – check the pullyies alignment and the belt, you might want to consider replacing the belt with a higher quality one (not necessarily higher priced one) especially if you notice that it is hard.

as for the rattling – sounds like something is too loose there that the vibration is causing it to move enough to make/break contact with the outfeed. I’d look into what it might be.
