Topic tags/keywords: jointer question

Hi fellow jocks, I’ve run across a Powermatic 53 jointer at what I consider a pretty good deal. Trying to help a friend out who’s short on cash.

However, I’ve got a Jointer already. The newer one is a Powermatic 53 like brand new, wired for 110V. I’m not sure if I want to keep the Grizzly (1152HW) or the Powermatic.

Any idea what this machine’s worth? I’ve got $250 in it, plus a 150 mile round trip to get it.

Thanks,

Awww fergetaboutit. The PM is a keeper. Sounds like a great catch. Bring me the Grizz. Oh well…I can dream can’t I?

Well Bill. I’ve gotta get rid of one of them. I’m retired. Where are ya? :)

I’d probably lean toward keeping the PM, but get ‘em both setup and see which you like best.

OK. Thanks guys. Though I’m still trying to figure out a value. I know I could probably sell my 1182HW for $200-250 (2 sets of knives, knife setting jig).

Think the PM would bring more than that? I’m thinking about going to the St Louis Woodworker’s Show this weekend and putting a sign on it in the bed of my truck.

I can’t find specs for either model, but assuming the Grizz is not way bigger then the PM, it is an easy choice. If you feel your Grizz is worth 200- 250, then set it up with a $275 sign on it.

Easy choice! Unless your buddy is going to bounce back one day and want that PM back. But you ain’t a pawn shop, he can’t blame you for not just holding it for him.

Powermatic over Grizz. every time, is that really what you wanted to know?

Guys, Thanks for all the info. I’ve got it now and I have the Owner’s manual as well. It was PM’s “Artisan” line of jointer in conjunction with their Artisan Saw. It has a corrugated aluminum fence. 3/4 HP Original PM motor. 3 knife cutterhead. I ran it for about 30 minutes and, though loud, ran fine, didn’t get hot, and didn’t make any strange noises.

I’m going to keep my Grizzly 1182HW, so, if anyone’s up for a trip 1/2 way to MO, hit me up and take it home!
