Topic tags/keywords: bandsaw question veneering scrollworking turning

Hi everyone,
I was planning on building a shed, but now my father has given me his garage (more or less) I want to buy a good bandsaw instead. I now have $1600 to spend, and if I have to spend it all to get a good bandsaw, I will. I have done quite a bit of research and my only conclusion can be that the Laguna 14” x 14” is the best one I can get for the money.

Here are the specs for this machine;

Motor: 2HP
Rack and Pinion Upper Guide: No
Foot brake: No
Rack & Pinion Table Tilt: No
Quick Release Blade Tension: Yes
Mob Kit Optional: Yes
Resaw Height: 14”
Cast Iron Table: Yes
220 volt 1 phase: yes
Amp Breaker: 20A
Maximum Blade Width: 1”
Table Size: 19-3/4” x 15-3/4”
Table Height: 35.5”
Double Miter Slot: Yes
Throat Clearance: 13.25”
Blade Length: 125”
Laguna Guides: Yes
Total Height: 70”
Weight: 290 Lbs.
Shipping Weight: 350Lbs.
Blade length 125”

At the moment, there is a special offer on where you get a free mobility kit or resawking blade worth $199. This bandsaw would cost me $1600 altogether, but I am seriously considering it.

Any thoughts on this machine or any of the laguna bandsaws would be of great help, and thoughts on the customer service of laguna would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am a woodturner
Conor

I almost bought that saw last summer, but reviews I read, and comments from people here on LJ’s convinced me otherwise. I kept reading over and over about terrible customer service.

The Powermatic 14” bandsaw has all the whistles and bells for around $1200 and is a darn good saw. I dont know about PM’s customer service, but assume it’s good just because I’ve never heard anything bad. I have compared the PM vs laguna 14” bandsaws head to head and I liked the PM better just because the PM had better quality accessories (mostly Carter) already installed.

Delta supposedly has finally released their new 14” bandsaw which I look forward to seeing. Now that Delta is no longer owned by Dewalt, then quality has come back up to standard and customer service is second to none, this is not hear say, I have dealt with Delta CS first hand recently and over the years.

Had a chance to look at the new delta bandsaws and the revamped older model today. Delta has added the same upgrade features to the old model that powermatic did to theirs a couple of years ago. The blade tensioner and quick release upgrades.

The biggest difference is when PM upgraded their model they jacked the price up to around $1200.
The Delta will be available at Rockler around the middle of the month for $749 ! I will be buying the Delta as soon as they start shipping them out !

I have the Laguna 16HD, it works as advertised. I have had no problem at all with customer service over 5 years of using their products (bandsaws, mortisers).

I do not have any experience with the 14, but I know their bandsaws are excellent, so it is a good choice in my opinion.

I have several Laguna products, and their customer service has been excellent.

As for the bandsaw, I have an 18LT and it is an outstanding saw. Although I haven’t compared 14” models, their larger saws are a significant step up from the Delta/Powermatic/Grizzly models in similar size.

Be aware that a 14” bandsaw can be a very functional saw, but the tight radius requires some compromises, and you would notice a significant improvement in a 16” saw. Beyond that, the extra capacity is nice, but the quality doesn’t improve as much as size continues to increase. But the difference between a 14” saw and a 16” saw is significant. With that said, a 14” saw can be very functional.

Uh! I don’t think that Trajan saws are what are needed. Nice try though.

^lol, they are some nice looking saws, though:)
.
I almost bought the same saw that JusFine has but the sales pressure was too much. I was ready for someone to jump out of a bush at me wearing a Laguna jumpsuit by the end of it, lol. That being said, I know that they are well respected in the bandsaw department. They ain’t cheap, but once you start adding Carter stuff, they’re all expensive in the end.

^Oh, you’re clever, Ylaina:) But I’m more of a Lenox carbide guy myself. 3/4 inch on my 20” vintage Rockwell Delta. I like the old battleships;)

Is it OK for someone to come on this forum and post sales ads? Sort of annoying.
Isn’t Trajan the same as Rong Fu? You can see them on YouTube listed as both.

Here’s most of whats on LJ and Sawmill Creek concerning Laguna Customer Service. They nearly went out of business due to poor customer service. If the more recent reviews show improvement then they may have got a new attitude due to the power of the web. Read through them and make up your own mind before you buy anything.
