So im thinking of building a Wood Lathe with a high powered drill from the garage. Going to be building the basic 2×4 version with a empty center for the tailstock to slide on.

My question is i cant seem to find out if the tailstock needs to be locked down or if it can float back and forth freely? will the Headstock hold the wood and tailstock in place?

Shopnotes Magazine- Issue #5 has a drillpress lathe that I think I’m going to try as it looks like a quick, simple, and functional build.
