Topic tags/keywords: question lathe turning

How do you tell if chisels are of high quality if the handles havee been replaced and there are no names showing? The reason I ask is I am looking at buying a large lot of turning tools and wondering how to tell what they are worth. All in all there is aleast 20 chisels. Both for spindles and bowls, plus chucks, face plates, sanding wheels, turning blans and much more. In all there are close to four or five boxes full of stuff.

Al,

When I started turning, I bought the “inexpensive package set”. As I got a little more experience, I purchased more specialized tools. What I found was that the more specialized- read expensive- tools had the makers name etched into the metal of the tool. Looking at the less expensive set, there are no marking on the metal. Maybe that could be a starting place.

I’m with Lew on this one! If it’s not stamped on the metal then it maybe a cheapie. Now if you do not have any chisels what a great way to start getting into turning!

I agree with biff_kpv and lew. The important thing to remember is to keep your tools sharp. The cheaper tools will not hold an edge as long thus requiring more frequent sharpening. If you can pick them up for a good price, it is a great way to try various types of tools to find out what works best for you. You can then upgrade later knowing it is money well spent on a tool that will get used.

Thanks for the help. I am planning to see the guy on tuesday and will see if they are marked. If not I will give a lower offer and see where it goes from there. I doo have a few spindel chisels, but have not had a chance to use them yet. Still working on rebuilding the head for my shop smith.

I like Sorby chisels. They seem to hold an edge well.
