I was given a shopsmith, one of the green machines, and I am trying to use it as a lathe. Never owned a lathe before. I am confused as to what else I need to make it a useful lathe. I have pictures to show you what I have now. What else do I need?

Also, I will be doing primarily table legs – no bowls or pens.

I’d appreciate any help!

Here's the pic

You need a chuck to go on the head unit to hold the one center. Also you will need a tool rest and some chisels. Do not foget to get a face sheild, the flying chips can be painfull if they hit your eyes(so I have heard).

Shop smiths are like Hoover vacuums. Everything that you need is in that box …........SOMEWHERE…........

I will add another thing: live tail center. It is not too expensive. I used the one in the pic and kept burning a hole in the end of my turning.
