I wish to put a breakfast bar on a wall that connects the livingroom to the kitchen in hopes it will open up both rooms and add more light. My problem is I really dont know how far from the floor I must go or from the ceiling down to the top of the bar.

I would find the bar stools that you want to use and add 10”-12” to the seat height to get your bar height.
With that said “typical” bar height is 40”-42”.
