Topic tags/keywords: finishing

i was wondering what you thought about paste wax as a final step in finnishing your project? just bought a rough carved wooden duck finished with many coats of toung oil and sanding between the final sand was with a 1500 grit. gave a sweet “wet” shinny finnish followed with wax and buff, thought it would realy enhance the glossy look but pretty much dulled the shine. can i save the finnish? is the wax and pollish a waste?

I used renaisance wax on my last project, and I’m glad I did. How long did you wait between the final tung oil coat and the wax? What wax did you use? How long did you let it sit?

I waxed all my cabinets by applying it with #000 steel wool. Stained if wanted, 2 coats of satin poly and then waxed.

God Bless

i let the tung oil final coat dry for around 12 hours, then rubbed on some “minwax past wax”. i got a gob of wax wraped in an old cotton tee shirt and applied the wax in small cirular motion, waiting about an hour the buffed off the wax with a small buffer.

Happy, if you used pure tung oil, it will not build to a shine like boiled linseed oil, and wax normally gives you a satin finish, compared to varnish, poly, etc. Since you had a shinny finish, you must of had a tung oil finish, which contains some kind of varnish. You can wipe the piece down with mineral spirits and remove the wax. It may dissolve the finish some also, depending on how long it’s cured. Then reapply your tung oil finish and it will be back to the stage before you applied the wax.
