I am designing a Tack locker and trunk, in hope of picking one to make, since I got a new horse. I have two nice designs but they are on paper and I HIGHLY doubt proportions are correct since I didn’t have graphing paper. I thought I might come here for some help…

For the locker I am looking for a more refined looking dense wood. I was thinking Maple, Oak or Cherry. Something that is dense enough not to splinter to much if it gets rubbed on. I would also like a more antiqued looking metal for hinges.
For the trunk I think I would be using 8’ Pine fencing rails and maybe a polar but I’m not sure the poplar would hold up to the stress put on a trunk. It would be very much more rustic and country-ish. Suggestion?

The locker is more practical in that it will hold everything I will eventually have or need but it is not as portable as the trunk. Should I make the one that “has it all” or since I might move my horse one that is easy to move? I know this isn’t exactly the place to ask question that in all honesty depends on my circumstances, but I am hoping someone has gone through building something similar and then kicking themselves for not building the other one first.

The other question is what would be the best program/software to use for this kind of designing? I have Sketch up but i haven’t gotten it yet. Is sketch up compatible with bamboo?
