To my fellow Lumberjocks and jockettes.
I just wanted to share this with you. The person I recieved this from is on the up and up. Matter of fact he warned me about something a few months ago and I listened and saved myself a HUGE headache. That’s all. I just wanted to share this with you all.
PEACE!!!

Hi All. I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus! I checked Snopes and it is for real!! Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message! With an attachment entitled ‘POSTCARD,’ regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which ‘burns’ the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called ‘POSTCARD’, even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

Hi Allison,

This is a hoax. I googled “postcard virus” and the results are clear. It’s a hoax.

If anyone EVER sends you a warning about something and does not provide a link to a real news story about it, you can guess that it is a hoax. Trust me – if “the most destructive virus ever” was unleashed, it’d be front page news.

One of my biggest pet peeves (so don’t take it personally) is when someone forwards me an email warning (virus, scam, etc) without doing the 12 seconds of Google research that it takes to verify whether it’s real or not.

Well I definitely need a glass of water to get my foot down my throat. I am so embarrassed. I never even thought about googling it! But I will stand by the fact this man warned me about another e-mail deal that was true.
Boy do I wish I could delete this! Sooo to all here, I do apologize, i felt like I was doin’ the right thing!
Thank You Eric, I am serious, it never crossed my mind to google it!
Thanks

Unfortunately, there are so many virus emails out there that you could spend a great deal of time researching them. You’re not alone Allison, I’ll bet most of us have passed something along that wasn’t quite accurate.

Don’t feel bad, Allison. We know your heart was in the right place. :-)

Generally, just about any time you see a virus warning that claims something is going to wipe out your entire hard drive it is a hoax. But just remember, Google and Snopes are your best friends on the internet.

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this! the first place I usually check is snopes.com, then a few of the a/v companies

Fred, you make a good point that email virus warnings are sometimes a combination of fact and fiction. If you read the snopes article you linked all the way through, you notice that pretty much the exact text of the email Allison quoted is identified as a hoax, even though there is such a thing as the postcard virus.

Don’t feel too bad. There are hundreds of these going around at any given time. Good place to check.

Aiilison, I’d rather a hundred false alarms than one stinky malicious virus. <g>

Nice catch everyone!

Allison…no need to feel bad, thanks for thinking of us enough to take the time to post…hoax or not! As far as viruses are concerned, I have a strict policy that I don’t open anything with an attachment unless I know beforehand that someone is sending something to me. I also never have the preview pane in use in my mail browser..if something is embedded in the body of the email the preview pane is like auto open. Absolutely never open anything that has FWD FWD FWD in the subject line, and never open any animated cards or things like that even if it is sent to me by someone I know. All my friends are under strict rules NEVER to send me chain email or postcards, I don’t care how cool it is that something happens after you send it to 12 people! I have had to re format my wifes computer 3 times in the last two years due to her love of junk email and her being on all her friends joke send lists.

mrtrim: If I sent that one around my office, there would be a few who would comply. Except that they would have to come ask ME how to delete all the files from their hard drive.

Allison,
Per your request I was not going to repliy to this post and let you crawl in your hole quietly : ) , even though I would have posted a thank you for the good intentions you had in mind for your fellow LJ’s.
But (and I hope this makes you feel better) I got an email yesterday from several friends with the same “post card” note you had started this thread with. They were doing the same as you, hopeing to save someone a head ache!
