Topic tags/keywords: wood beech price sawmills cubic foot bench stand lathe stand lathe beechwood ireland width thickness length question

Hi all, I am planning on building a new workshop for myself, and I am planning on making a stand for my lathe. (I know I’m probably getting ahead of myself, but planning is essential!!! I want to make it from Beech wood.
I rang a guy from a local Sawmills and gave him the following measurements;
Quantity Length Width Thickness 2 150cm(4.9’) 10cm(4’‘) 6cm(2.4’‘) 4 85cm(2.8’) 10cm 10cm 2 100cm(3.3’) 10cm 6cm

I was quoted a price of €25($35)

Is this good or is it a rip-off??

You’d be paying for the shop labor to dimension the wood as
you’ve specified. You’ll save in the long run buying boards
and sawing them yourself to size. You get to keep the scrap
then and use it in other ways.

If I bought a 10ft 6×1 plank of beech from Declan Byrne & Sons in Carlow, I wouldn’t get much change out of €25. Your pieces are coming out of 3 and 4” stock, it’s a bargain. Where are getting this stuff from? I take it you’re in Ireland?

Hi, I posted this on another forum too and I got the same responses that it was dirt cheap. I think he may have thought I was giving the width and thickness in millimetres, I am going to ring him tomorrow and see if he misunderstood.

You don’t get a lot of timber here for that kind of money .So it seems reasonable to me. Have a go you will regret it otherwise. Alistair
