Topic tags/keywords: band saw tires glue true

Hey guys, thanks for all the “welcomes” and ya I will be around from time to time.

I just got an old 12 Beaver Band Saw. Welded up a new stand for it tall enough for a guy 6’3”. I think I have a problem with the tires though. They are chewed up and out of round. So much so that when I run the saw the top part deflects down .007” which enough to get it shaking ! When I say the “top part” I mean the top wheel along with whole upper part of the saw. I put the dial on the table and indicated the bottom of the upper part. I put the dial on the tire and role it around and see as much as .015 on the tire. The question is where to get new tires. I can get them made and glued on for $50 bucks. Has anyone gone this route before. Or maybe I’m way off and someone knows what the problem is.

One other thing I have discovered is that this saw requires about an 84” blade and here in Southern Ontario no one has 84” blades !

BTW I picked up the saw because I want to build a violin. Seemed like a good idea at the time. :)

Hi Gary thanks for the reply. I haven’t looked at the links yet. I have been getting longer blades and silver soldering them to length. Not a big problem.
So do you think that what I described is indeed the tires? I’m off to have a look at these suppliers.

Well since I’m in Canada I will pick up a set of tires at LeeValley. I will be going right past there in the next few days.

OK I got my new tires. Any advice as far as putting them on. I did the top one as per instructions. Put the tire in 120 degree water with dish soap for 5 minutes and stretch into place. Well I’m here to tell you there is a lot of stretching involved ! How are you supposed to get it on evenly?? Luckily my brother showed up just then and the two of got it in place.

I will attemp the other one tomorrow.

Menessis, I’ve put new tires on both the rubber kind and the new orange of blue ones. Their composition escapes me right now. Once I got them on I took a screwdriver and pried up just enough to get a 1/2 inch dowel under the tire. Then I run the dowel around under the tire and it should even out the tension. With the orange and blue ones no glue is necessary but with the black rubber ones they should be glued on. I hope that helps.
