I just joined after the third Google search in a week brought me to the LJ forum! Obviously there’s some exciting things going on here, and I just had to join in.
I’m a former Shopsmith Store Manager and Academy Instructor with 20+ years of Mark V ownership and experience under my belt. I’m currently a trainer for a furniture/cabinet hardware company and continue to be an active woodworker and burgeoning blogger.
One interesting thing I’ve found here is that some of the comments from at least one of my blogs have been used within the LJ forums. I suppose some would say it’s flattery, but if your source isn’t quoted how can anyone be flattered? If someone’s post or site has inspired you, share a link. That way others can be inspired too, and the author can receive encouragement to carry on via traffic and even revenue.
(I’m stepping off my soapbox now)
Scott

Can you give me the example you used? I’m not sure I know what you are talking about.

I’ve shared with GaryK in a private message an example of what I’m talking about. I don’t feel the need to single anyone out, which examples would do, but suffice it to say that we should cite the sources of the content of our posts if it’s not original.

I agree if you are copying a comment. It should be referenced to the originator.

Scott,

I agree with you 100 percent. I would like to add that, in some instances, the writer may not remember the source or how to post a reference to the site. And at times some of us just get caught up in posting comments that, in our enthusiasm, crediting the source is simply overlooked.

But I do agree a conscious effort should be made to credit others where it is due.

Very well said and handled..You are right on the money when you say that content used from another’s blog should be linked. I don’t think anyone here would argue that fact, or take credit for an individuals ideas.. If it happens here I’m sure it’s just an over-site by the member. Welcome to the Jocks… sounds like you have much to offer. I will look forward to seeing some of your posts.

O.k. yea I gotta a bad attitude. But, once I saw one of my inventions I designed at Purdue built by some corporation I got wise and decided whatever I print/post/say is freely distributable. If I want it copyrighted I’ll publish it under copyright law or shut up….not that copyright law does much of anything anyway. My attitude is freely conversing and exchanging info and have no need for taking credit for anything…. I probably learned it from some one else that taught me anyway.

Years ago there was a program that allowed you to make several copies to your clipboard without reloading after every one.
I find myself having to put text in the post then close it and go back to the other site to get the pertinent info to properly credit the other guys stuff.

I do this pretty diligently but sometimes not.

If somebody can remember what the program I’m referring to was Would gladly load it up and use it to embellish my postings here.

BTW I’m with cats-paw re the copyright thing. If you post your stuff on an active site such as this be prepared to be “flattered”.

p.s. imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

Bob and others,
I understand what you are saying, and I agree… in part. My dad used to say never to put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want posted in public, cuz you never know when someone might just post it for you.

Did you happen to notice that when you clicked the little box hat says you agree to abide by the rules of this site that you agreed that “You are responsible for copyright issues“? Did you also notice the LJ site has a copyright notice on every page?

Just to prove what a nerd I am, I’ve researched copyright law today and it’s quite interesting. http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html

What I found most interesting was the fact that I was contributing to this site long before I joined it!

BTW, I like it here already! Thanks for all the greetings and even for the “flattery”.

Yours in sawdust, Scott
