Topic tags/keywords: question bandsaw

I might be able to purchase a used Delta 16” bandsaw but it only has a 1/2 hp motor so i was wondering if i could buy another motor probably around 1 1/2 hp and switch it out with the old motor. I can get the bandsaw for 60$ and the guy said that i can try it before i buy it. hope someone can help.

I’d go for the bigger motor. make sure that the motor runs in the correct direction or that it is reversable by changing the wiring.

I got a couple of 3HP motors but they turned the wrong direction. I had to have an electric motor shop do the rewiring.

Lot’s of places carry motors. I buy my extras from http://www.surpluscenter.com
Just make sure you buy one that runs at 1750 rpm. Also if you want to reuse the old pulley, make sure the shaft size matches, otherwise just get a new pulley to match the motor and the same diameter as the old motor pulley.

Also, check the type of mountings required. There’s nothing more frustrating than than getting the new motor home only to find you you need to re-engineer the mounting systems on the motor, saw or both.

thanks for the help everyone. i think i might go ahead on this purchase if i can get up to the guys house to get it. he said that it cuts up to 8 1/2 in so i figure if i get a 2 hp motor after i tune it up and get some blades should be able to resaw some on it.
