Topic tags/keywords: old tools

Went to the local auction again, and it was a lumberjock dream come true, and the lumberjocks wife’s nightmare. It was tool give away night.

Picked this up for $25.00.

Also picked up a box containing an older Stanley Jack plane, a Sears block plane, and several Wood thread cutting tools ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 3/4 inch. The entire box cost me $30.00 Does anyone know of a website that can help date the planes?

I also picked up a piano for $25.00 that I intend to use the keyboard and wood to make some piano boxes sometime later.

I have said it before, but I love working with older tools, and at the price you can pick them up for, it is more cost effective to buy them older!

Are the rest of the folks at these auctions “mechanically retarded”? You’ve been getting a nice set up with the old tools you’re finding. Congrats on a great find.

Fred – Thanks for the link.

Tim – I wonder the same thing as I am sitting there waiting for the price to drop to a level I think will start and it keep falling and falling and falling. Who am I to complain if no one wants this stuff: I enjoy it and I will buy it.

Oh yea, it works fine – just like a new one – only better. The belt looks almost brand new and I can still read the wording on it: It reads “Rockwell Parts,” so this one has been around for a while and not used too hard.

I love old tools also. I’m just too impatient to wait and find them.

Looks like you hauled in the catch of the day … auctions are pretty funny that way … usually tend to see tools go for way more or way less than they should … but it’s always nice to see the good guys (someone who’s gonig to use the tool) win!

Enjoy!

I just realized I have a slight problem: the work benches that surround my garage wall are only 20” wide, and the base is 16” deep and the motro sticks out the back almost 5”. Looks like a remodeling of the work shop is called for. I have always wanted to make a corner shelf where my little band saw and old drill press would have fit, but now is the time.

cool find! try the following page for plane dating:

http://www.hyperkitten.com/tools/stanley_bench_plane/dating/dating_flowchart.html

I have what appears to be an even older version of this DP. Great tool but the switch is on the wrong side, as you may soon find out. ;-)

If you put it in the corner be sure to put it on a cart on wheels. You may wish to put only a small hole in something BUT, that something might be longer than you have room for stuck way off in the corner. Now mind you “I’ve” never made that mistake, I just heard some guys talking . . .

You can also try Googling the make and model number (IE: Sargent 714). This will provide some links that may help date and price the plane.

As for the drill press not fitting the bench…You might need to build a bigger shop and bench. I’m sure your wife will understand…after it’s finished!

I already have the idea for the new bench for the drill, band saw, and scroll saw. I have been taking the two saws on and off a cabinet shelf hanging on the wall every time I use themt, but that is going to change soon. The better half of my marriage will have to do with out the garage for a while, but oh well.

I have located enough info on the Stanley plane, thanks to Fred, but I can’t find anything on the Sears plane. It is marked Sears (not Craftsman) and the model # appears to be 107.37031 – there is a splotch of paint over some of the numbers.

As far as the date of the DP: Rockwell bought Delta in 1945, so I am thinking early 1950’s – but I am still researching.
