Topic tags/keywords: site features

UPDATED: January 2013

When you’ve been a member of an online site for some time you take a lot of features for granted. Sometimes you forget that something is there and sometimes you just didn’t know it was available in the first place.

Here is a list of some of our LumberJocks.com features:

  • LJ eMag – a monthly newsletter; check it out
  • LumberJocks’ Awards – “Winter Awards” and “Summer Awards”, members post projects based on a specified category and members vote, selecting the Award Winners; see past events here
  • LumberJocks’ Challenges – events held throughout the year (see past & current challenges here)
  • LumberJocks’ Classes – members facilitate classes on specific skills or projects, with members following along, step-by-step (see current and past classes here)
  • Home-page Top 15 – acknowledging most viewed/discussed/favourite projects throughout the day; see more here
  • Home-page Pulse – a tool that you can adapt to meet your needs to keep up to date on what is happening on the site as well as postings/members you are following, click on the “pulse” tab to see what options are available
  • Home-page Shuffle – taking a look at postings from the past, random projects/blogs etc
  • Home-page Roll the Dice – button located in the featured member section; check out random members
  • Tags – help members find postings tagged with a specific word, such as “bowl”; you can search for project, blogs, or forum topics; start your search here
  • speaking of tags: check out our Gateways to projects, safety tips, and more. A link to the list is located in the toolbar at the bottom of the page
  • LumberJocks’ Downloadable Toolbar – a downloadable toolbar for easy access
Also… did you know:
  • photo posting – you can upload photos directly from your computer for projects as well as blogs, comments etc? check it out
  • you can link to photos you have posted elsewhere on the internet by putting an exclamation mark before and after the photo’s http address
  • blog series - you can link blogs together, creating a series; great for projects in process; read more here
  • project cards are a great way to share projects; read more here
  • widgets are available for your websites – here's the information
  • project galleries are a unique way to showcase your projects (the tool is currently in the shop being fixed) read about it here
  • flags – you can flag a posting/comment if you feel that it is inappropriate for our online community (flag buttons are visible on each posting); flag it and we will check it out, making a decision about it based on the best interest of all the members and the site as a whole
And…
  • we have a Memoriam page in memory of our fellow LumberJocks who, sadly, have passed on
  • to contact Site Management, you can post something in the Site Feedback Forum, send a private message to myself, or Martin

——————-

July 12/13 – updated site feature

Our LumberJocks’ Workshop Page – thanks to Martin’s behind-the-scenes-work we can now easily see whose workshop pages have photos included. The old system was a simple listing of everyone’s workshops. The new system includes a thumbnail of one of the photos included—or a blank space if the page hasn’t been updated – and they can be sorted by most discussed and most favourited. Nice. Thanks, Martin.

Thanks for the advice!

Sometimes it’s nice to get a reminder once in awhile, of tools we have to work with.

Thank you, Debbie… Nice recap!

Question:
Photo’s & Postings, Projects, Blogs, all data…
Is there a purging schedule where data is deleted?
If so, what is it?

I’ve made the mistake of moving images around on Photobucket. and losing them on LJs

This shouldn’t happen here, I hope.

I don’t understand… if you lost them on LJs ... we ARE on LJs now… (???) You hope what?

Joe!
I found out that when you move a file in Photobucket, like from one album to another it gets knocked off of LJs. You have to edit your project, & enter it from its new location, because they’ve changed the address of your image.

I’ve had that experinence with Photo Bucket i.e. Losing Images. Although as Joe said I’m not clear on your Statement Dick & Barb.

Sometimes, on here and other sites, anything I brought from MY Account on Photo Bucket that I THOUGHT were images that belong to ME just disappeared for no apparent reason and were replaced by that PB Sign.

It woukl appear that by some means PB retains some kind of “Grip” on your Images.

SO! I got off there about a year ago. EVERYTHING I had Posted ANYWHERE was removed by them!!

If you read their Privacy Policy you’ll see that there are about 30 to 50 (I forgot now) OTHER SERVICES that WILL use ALL YOUR Information you post on PB by Default, Unless you go to a certain page and have their “Right To Do So” Removed by checking ALL the little boxes. I did that BUT could only get about 60% of them off.

Most of those other “SERVICES” place “Cookies” on your Computer. They are what I refer to as “Info Gatherers and Re-Sellers”

Use the “img” button above the Posting your doing, bring them here from your own Computer. There are also other Photo Hosting sites you can use that will work on here if your Storage is Maxed Out on your Computer.

Dick & Barb:

That makes sense…sounds very logical and proper… when something is “moved”, it usually ends up with a different address.

Thank you for clarifying…

Now, as pics here on LJ’s do not resdie in various folders, etc. and We the People really don’t care where the pic. ends up… there is no need for us to know… BUT, IF pics are ever moved, all uses of associated addresses will also be updated… because they are all in the same system.

Rick!
I don’t think I’ve ever lost any images, except the ones that I shuffled around.
