Just wondering, does anyone here have, and still use a Foley Belsaw planer-moulder. I have a Foley 985 planer-moulder that is in great condition. This model has the 5hp motor, so it has plenty of guts. Outside of being big, heavy, and cumbersom, it does a great job planing and the moulding cutters work great also. There is an attachment for this machine, called the Tri-Sand, which to me looks like nothing more than some cardboard rolls of sandpaper that fasten around the 3” cutterhead and are held fast with some gibs and the use of an additional pulley and belt to take care of the speed. I have look high and low to no avail, to find anyone who has ever used one of these. I do a lot of segmented bowl turning, and was wondering if it would do a decent job on sanding the strips, most of the wood that I would be sanding is from a range of 1/8” to 1&1/2” thick and probably 1” 2” & 3” wide at the most. If anyone here has ever used one, has one, or knows of anyone that has and uses one, I sure would like to hear from them as to what the results were. This is a relatively cheap investment, they still sell from the Belsaw store for aroung $96.00, and that is far cheaper than a 300to$500 drum sander.

Most thickness sanders use a drive belt beneath the work. This allows
them to sand smaller parts. The Belsaw uses feed rollers above the
work and that is a limitation. The other is that the Belsaw lacks variable
feed speed, which is a boon when drum sanding.

Did you ever get the tri-sand accessory for your Belsaw? Like you I am interested but can’t find anyone who has used it.
