I sit on a stool in my workshop, the lights off, the soft hum of the air cleaner is all that can be heard. As I sharpen my best chisel I imagine this is what the eve of a great battle was like for a soldier in the Civil War. I take out a sharpie and write “Stumpy” on a scrap of paper, I’ll pin that onto my shirt tomorrow so I can be identified is I get too mangled in the heat of battle. I wonder what Charles is doing in the southern camp. Probably the same thing as me, drinking flat beer and choking down a last meal of hard tack. Tomorrow will be the day, tomorrow we’ll see what we’re made of. North and South will meet one last time, and only one will walk away.
I pour myself another dram. My fingers caress the wood stock of my weapon, the only thing I have to defend myself, my box. I named it ‘ol Bess and she’s never let me down. I’d better give her another once-over, you can never be too prepared. They say there’s a bullet with every man’s name on it out there, somewhere. I scratch my name on a spent .22 casing and slip in into my pocket. Now I know where mine is…
THAT’S RIGHT- IT’S ALMOST TIME!
The tabletop/box making contest between the great Charles Neil and the adequate Stumpy Nubs is nearing its deadline. On Saturday afternoon (November 5, 2011) Our entries will be posted and YOU will get to judge which one is the best. But there’s been a change to the rules- instead of making the boxes for each other, we will be auctioning them off right here on Lumber jocks for charity!
So mark it on your calender! This Saturday you’ll beed to tune in and place your vote, and then (if you so choose) place your bid to own one of the two entries. The entire amount if your bid will be donnated to one of two charities: Stumpy’s favorite- Lions Club International or Charles’ favorite- The Wounded Warrior Project.
Don’t forget! These are two great causes and Stumpy needs every vote he can get if he’s going to beat Charles!
(Originally the proceeds were going to be donated to Escalate Media, which owns Lumber Jocks, but they wanted a worthwhile charity to benefit. They will still be supporting our efforts, and we are grateful for their generous decision!)

Nope- unless I bid on it- which I might! Of course I wouldn’t place my bid until the very end because I wouldn’t want anyone knowing which one is his before everyone else judges or bids. I expect by then the price will be too high for my wife to approve!

I have just one question , why is this posted here and not in the main forum… seems lost here, to me, I like to never found it, had it not been for the PM, I would have missed it , just curious
Actually, threads on a forum like this get stale after several days. People stop looking at them, assuming there’s nothing new except for a few misc. new comments that may or may contain anything useful to them. Because the charity situation is an important thing to get out, I put it in a new thread with the title “UPDATE”. Now when people see this thread, they assume it is new information (and they would be right) and click on it.
It’s an old message board trick, widely used across the internet when important information must be added to a conversation in progress. The conversation usually switches to the new thread and the old, stale one dies off.
You need to get with the times, Charles. Learn about these new-fangled computer machines…

Stumpy , I turn 59 tomorrow, and have the miles to show,, and am a good judge of when someone is peeing on my leg and telling me its raining, good try, you do have a gift, you can BS with the best of them… in any case ,I wish you the best, in the challenge,
Oh yea, that BS thing is now called “creative marketing ”, get with the times will ya Stumpy !
Charles, Gotta love the Scorpio group. I’m 65 on Sunday and a proud new participant of Medicare. No one’s gonna pee on my leg either. Hear that, “2nd place” Stumper?

Facts don’t lie Charles. When you post a new thread, you usually average one view per minute for the first few hours, then is starts dropping off. By the end of the third day it’s only a handful of views an hour, and that’s only IF those people also comment and keep it on the main page. By the fourth or fifth day, nobody comments anymore and it loses its place on the top of the forum list. Most threads die off at that point, with only a few exceptions. Threads get stale. It’s the circle of life…
Where I come from, calling what I said BS is the same as calling it a lie. (No, I’m not accusing you or calling me a liar, I’m just making a point.) Why on earth would I make a bunch of crap up, just to start a new thread? I could have just done whatever the heck I wanted and offered no explanation whatsoever. The fact is, this is important to me, and I didn’t want to risk anyone having tuned out before the new information about the chosen charities got out there.
You may not agree with my methods, but I make a living on the computer and know a thing or two about marketing. If your personal experience has taught you differently, that doesn’t negate my experience in that area. I don’t know why you seem to think I am anything but a straight shooter, I think I have a reputation for saying whatever I think, even if it costs me in the end, but as you yourself are fond of saying… “whateva”...
You’re a good guy, Charles. I would never piss on your leg.
