The best thing I ever read about Andy Rooney, and I’m relying on my memory rather than wikipedia, is when he, by chance, looked up a fellow reporter while in Germany during WWII. The reporter’s name was Hal Boyle, and he wrote for “The Stars and Stripes”, a military newspaper of the day. Hal Boyle was assigned to check out a mysterious POW camp, just liberated by the Allies. Andy was invited to join him. Turned out, it was Aushwitz! Not a POW camp, but a horrific, hellish scene that Hal and Andy saw with their own eyes, and compelled to tell a disbelieving world of the nightmare inflicted on the world by the Nazis. God bless those two men.

I am already missing Andy, and his addendum to 60 minutes…..since he retired. It is sad to hear that he is not well. He was kind of a hero for me. To be working…....contributing to society when he is over 90 years old…....remarkable. Not many like him.

I am still working, now in my 70’s…....a happenstance of good health, culture, and genetics. Got a long way to go to beat Andy.

To be able to contribute to society at my age is a blessing of sorts. But then again, in reality, it is mostly an obligation and responsibility.

I owe society for my circumstance and education. Medical education is mostly paid by society….essentially never by the recipient, we pay only a small fraction.

You don’t get gold stars for IQ points, and ability… get obligation and responsibility. Somehow I think that moral obligation has been lost in the current generation.

Somehow, I think Andy understood that. Different business. Entertainment versus health. But still important in our lives.

Hope he lives a while longer, to enrich our lives, and further his.
