Came across the following on local craigslist.

Jet 6” jointer – asking $350

http://cedarrapids.craigslist.org/tls/2669737435.html

I think the seller is asking too much for this jointer, but would like to get your opinion on it. If it is too much, what do you think will be a fair offer?

Thanks!

Way too much. $150 Would be the max I’d go.

Do you know the model number? How old it is? May have looked over that info.

If it helps you I got a Powermatic Model 54 on CL for $300. New it sells for 1K. Only had been used a little bit. Gotta Love CL! For that item in the pick I would go no more than $250

I guess my hunch was right. Too high of a price! This is the down side of living in a relatively smaller town; used tools dont come by as often on CL and when they do, the asking price is much more than it would be if they were selling it in a big city.

I sold a JJ6CS which is the closed stand jointer last year for $300.Mine was from the mid late 90’s it was blue. That one is from 2000 on. The last time I looked the JJ6CS was going for 7 and change.

I’m not saying the price of that one is good but if it’s local to you go look at it and make an offer. What is the worse that happens they say no. I have seen the open stand ones like that for sale here in NY all over the board price wise from $175 – $300. Old Delta, Rockwell’s etc.

Happy jointer hunting.

You can purchase a new grizzly 6” for that price…..not that they are absolutely similar…..but the issue with used is paying a lower price to reimburse you for the wear and tear on the machine. If you are paying what another machine sells for new (and the Grizzly is not a bad machine by the way)...then I would suggest the asking price here is too high. Try making an offer for 150 ish…that is about what I would expect to pay….like said above….if they don’t like your offer, all they can say is no.

They are about $500 new. I found one at http://www.powertool-box.com/product.php?productid=17571 that is $515 and looks just like the one on the craigslist link you posted.

It doesn’t seem to out of line when compared to buying a new unit. I purchase my JJ6CS Jet “closed stand” jointer from Craigslist a few years back and paid $300.. at the time it seemed like a steal considering it included a mobile base and two sets of replacement knifes.. oh and it was in perfect shape. Make them an offer, I bet they’ll negotiate if a motivated seller.

$350 for a used 6” jointer?
What – - is he planning on retiring after the sale?

That’s the lighter weight model with an open stand….it likely has a 3/4hp motor. $350 would be more than I’d pay for a used heavier closed stand model with 1hp motor, but is twice what the open stand model is worth IMHO. You can get a new 1hp closed stand Grizzly with built in wheels and a warranty for $395 ($469 shipped).

There’s a similar Delta in Denver that says make offer…I’d offer $175-$200 for it.
