Hi, I’m looking for a recommendation for a finish for some cabinets I just built. It’s a bank of cabinets for my utility room built from unfinished birch plywood. I’m going to paint the face frames, but I’m open to suggestions on how to finish the cabinet interiors. What’s the cheapest, quickest way to finish them? Primer and paint, or??? The cabinets will receive moderate wear, so durability is a factor, but not as important as cost and speed.

Thanks for your input!

Use a urethane inside. Don’t forget to let it cure properly. A clear or natural finish is acceptable for sure.

(I hate urethane except for high use areas such as the interiors.)

Thanks for the reply. What’s the easiest kind of urethane to apply?

Mask your faceframes and spray or brush a clear, flat, polyurethane on the interiors. For future reference, try using prefinished ply when you can. It saves the hassle of finishing interiors.

BTW, if you’re using shelf pins, use the correct size drill to clear the pin holes after everything is dry. I just give them a twist by hand.

Just remember that an oil b ased urethane will “yellow” somewhat. If that is an issue, use a water borne product.
