Do any of you use the iPad in the shop or for woodworking purposes? I need some ammunition to approach the “Bean Counter”!

Ah the iPad. One of the gadgets that you buy and say its a great investment.

Bought my wife one last year and we use it everyday. Bought an iPad 2 for me and I use it everyday. It does not replace the computer it enhances your tech experience. Have to fix some thing look itu an have info at your finger tips. Read books, magaziine, check email, woodworking app, google earth, iTunes, Skype, Internet, photo album, take pictures, list goes on.

I use mine for everything when I don’t want to use my computer. The bean counter told me to get my own.

i LOVE my ipad. Agree with everything mrg said above! can’t replace a computer but it is an amazingly handy little device you can just carry around with you.

As far as your question, I do use it in my shop. If I find a plan or something online that I want to build, I can bring up the pictures/plans on my ipad and look at them while building. However I cover it up with a t-shirt or towel so i dont get saw dust all over it!!!

Tell her you need some beans for this….you’ll love it

Add me to the list of people who really like their I-pad. However, I do not take it into the shop.

In my case, my shop and my den are about 25 feet apart and in my den I have my main computer (Mac). I use my computer quite a bit in conjunction with my woodworking both to connect to internet sites and to use the spreadsheet for trigonometry problems. I like having a computer close and see no need for a computer (or my I-pad) in the shop.

I don’t have an ipad or iphone or any of that (except the cheapest ipod they sell) so I use my laptop (Toshiba) for everything from school, to LJs, to my shop. It has done everything I have ever wanted it to do so I’m more than happy with it.

I don’t have an iPad, but if I did it would certainly come in handy, as long as I could keep it clean in the shop.

Now if there was a version of Sketchup for iPad, that would be amazing.

Love mine…pretty much replaces the computer for most of what I do, unless for serious word processing, page layout stuff, gaming, doing astronomy, etc. For Internet surfing and email, which is much of what I use a PC for anyway, it is hard to beat…unless I had a Mac laptop of some kind.

I haven’t seen the need to use it in the shop yet, except when I needed to read the PDF instructions for construction of my Blum Blumotion drawers for the kitchen. However, it is nice if you need to view videos or tutorials for various tasks. Of course this can be done inside, but if your shop is somewhat of your “man cave” then it really is an almost perfect device…because it is sealed well, unlike a computer which needs to cycle air to keep the CPU cool, the iPad will be a bit better protected.

However, I do use my older iPhone 3G as an iPod in the shop.

I have the back issues of FWW on my Touchpad. Does not go into the shop, but a woodworking tool none the less.

I am posting this on my new iPad2. I run an IT company and got one because my law and medical clients want to use them to access data on their servers. Bought this thing the day Steve Jobs died. My first Apple product!

As others have stated, they won’t replace a computer. I use this everyday now and have taken it to the shop on occasion. It is very light, great for web browsing and video. It excels as a multimedia tool.

For reading books and manuals I still use my Kindle DX or old fashioned paper. I still use my computer with two monitors at work, however the iPad is always with me now.

i love mine. i use it for listening to music, and reading woodworking magazines in pdf format. also good for looking up a quick reference for something, or displaying plans for a build.
