I think I’m developing a problem:

I think about WW all the time – I check the forums during lunch & breaks at work, and again before I go to bed. My reading material is almost entirely WW books & tool catalogues. I’ll spend 1/2 an hour in the shop just admiring a finish, and trying to figure out how to make it smoother.

I can never seem to get enough time in the shop… I consider heading out as soon as dinner is over, and again after we put the boy to bed. If I didn’t feel guilty about family time, I’d be in there every weeknight. I get up earlier on Saturdays than the rest of the week to get the max time in.

I have a huge long list of stuff I want to build or install for the shop:
—dust collection
—some sleds for the tablesaw
—tool chest to keep the rust off my planes & chisels
—hanging case to keep the saws in
—low assembly table

I have a list of skills I need to learn & practice:
—sharpening
—panel glue-up
—planing
—dovetails
—M & T

Then I might finally get back to making furniture:
—bookshelf for boy #2 on the way
—toybox
—blanket chest for LOML
—media cabinet for my sister

I’m exaggerating – but only a little. Does this sound familiar? Smack me around and give me some perspective. I feel like I need a 12-step program for WW to get some control…

I wanted to get to the shop every night also, family time prevailed. However my wife and I came up with Wed. night as shop night and a light dinner and she would work on her projects. Works well, took away the feeling of wanting to be in the shop every night.

I don’t think any of us got our shops or tools put togeather in a short time. Just start and keep plugging.

Enjoy the process of thinking it through as much as the actual doing. That just means you’re doing something you love.

Workin’ the wood is an addictive hobby. There’s always one more thing to build; one more tool to buy; one more technique you could do better. Fortunately, as time goes on, you end up with a whole lot of really nice and interesting stuff for your home and family.

Jevin,

You ARE in the right place. Most of us here share the same passion. It is difficult to find time to fuel our addiction with demands from family and work but that only serves to make the time in the shop more appreciated.

Now if I could only figure out how to post responses and run a table saw at the same time…............

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

Do you think about it when you are trying to sleep ? I bought some new tools I am trying to fit into my shop. That added little bit has forced me to sign up for WWA. Not a pretty sight … a bunch of grown men and women sitting around trying not to talk about WOOD. Do you need there web sight ??? HELP

I don’t have time to be addicted the woodworking anymore. I’m severely hooked on LJ’s ;^(

As the addiction gets worse you’ll find yourself driving along looking at trees in a yard or in the woods and fantasizing about the lumber it could yield. Soon you will be able to identify every tree you see down to large weeds.

When you start hiding little baggies of sawdust around the house so you can get up in the middle of the night and sniff them, you’ve reached the Point of No Return.
