Topic tags/keywords: question

I’ve been offered a significant quantity of black walnut, red oak (fs ans qs), white oak (fs and qs), hickory, soft maple, and cherry.

$2/bf for the walnut and $1.25-$/1.50 for the other stuff. All rough, various widths, no premium for wide or thick boards.

Good deal or not?

i’d buy it for that. It would have to be in pretty rough shape to not be worth those prices.

Solid price, I would be a buyer on all but fs oak. Is the wood dried already?

Buy all you can afford or have room to store.

Thanks. wasn’t sure. Don’t see much around here but home center or woodcraft prices, all inflated, I know.
This guy had 30,000+ bf at one time (he operated his own mill) and has downsized to just turning. I’d make a wild guess he’s got a few thousand left.
My friend is letting me store in his unused 2 car . I guess I had better get busy building some racks, Or at least find some palettes and lots of stickers.

Everyone who is anti-flatsawn oak….is the price bad, or do you just not like flatsawn oak?

red oak price is just ok, not nearly as discounted as the others. I should have specified no to the fs red oad. White oak is good, but not as discounted as the others, but still a good deal if it is clear. Just not a fan of fs red oak. Just my personal opinion.

I don’t consider that a price, I consider it a steal.

Sounds like a good buy compared to prices around me.
If you store in the garage make sure it’s up off the concrete.

You can store it here if you want. I’ll take good care of it for you.

A little of both Eric. It’s not bad, just not a great price like the rest. I use oak sometimes, I just don’t pay for it. I use scraps of flooring that I got from the dumpster. New flooring. I’ve seen so many oak cabinets that I’m sick of them. Oak makes for some nice boxes from time to time.

I cut, air-dry, and sell hardwood lumber on the side. Those are very good prices except for the walnut and qs white oak. Those are great prices.

I’ll try to casually skip over much of the FS red oak while I’m picking :-)

I like QS best too, but even the FS white oak looked nice (clear).

I do have some red oak accents in the house, so having some around will allow me to match the existing woodwork on the shoe lockers, cabinets and bench seats in the mudroom. See? I knew I could find a good use for it!!

Thanks for the input, this will be my first major stock up on rough lumber. going to try to buy as much as I can afford.

I know what to do with the maple, white oak, cherry and walnut. Any good ideas for hickory? Cutting boards? Boxes?

This makes me sad. I never find a deal on wood.

Congratulations, stack’em to the rafters.
