Jim, Poly should do fine over Ebony. I have only worked with ebony once as an accent in a jewelry box and I put poly on it. it has such a tight grain that it doesn’t really “soak” it up…which is fine. Poly is a film finish and doesn’t need to soak in. The only thing I can think of when applying to ebony and maple in the same project is that the film on the ebony may build quicker than on the maple. Will this cause an uneven finish at the transition from maple to ebony? I don’t know but I could see how that may occur. I would say make sure you sand well in between coats and that may help alleviate that…if it does start to happen. Hope that helps some. Good luck. Greg -- "Hey, you dang woodchucks!
