Back story, my dad works in the machine resale industry. Usually, it’s large metalworking machines (huge CNC machines). But he occasionally comes across smaller shops that have smaller machines. generally, he’ll come across a small shop or even garage whose owner goes under, or dies, and the family just wants to get rid of everything so he’ll buy all the shop machines, and then sell them off.

With this in mind, i gave him a list of tools i was on the look out for, just if he happened to come across them, because i know it’s possible, and he can get the tools for a great deal. My list started with just a drill press or a band saw. The next day, he told me a shop he often worked with had a drill press for me. It was a small HF drill press, but it was still free, and worked. So after that, i gave him a much bigger list, because why would I limit myself if he comes across this stuff anyway.

So last week, he found a shop that had a bunch of stuff, but it was in Arizona, and he didn’t want to ship anything. So he decided to come out here (he lives in Arizona), and buy me some.

First he tried to take me to HF to get some stuff, and i would have been ok with a band saw from there, so i thought it’d be ok. Once we got there, he didn’t like anything. So we decided to go back home and look up some stuff.

Long story short, on the way are a new Jet 14” band saw (JWBS-14DXPRO), and a SawStop Pro Cab (110V) with the 36” fence. I’m pretty stoked because I was more than willing to watch craigslist every day, and hope to find a deal at some point. But it’s hard to turn down free tools, especially when they’re brand new and nice.

TL;DR – asked dad to keep eye out for cheap used tools and he decided to buy me a Jet band saw, and Saw Stop PCS.

The funny thing is that his one stipulation was that I have to make him a nice pen. I told him that I can’t make a pen with any of those tools and he said “that’s not my problem”. So it looks like I’m on a hunt for a cheap lathe.

If he runs out of people to give tools to, send him to WA ;-)) You must be a good kid to have around!!

Update, my tools came in on thursday, so I had to take friday so I could set them up and play. now I just have to find some time to actually make stuff with them.

I also need to start fine tuning them, and make some new tables and jigs. I’ll be making an outfeed table for the table saw which I also plan to use as an assembly table. And I’ll be making a new table for the bandsaw. And then a crosscut sled, and probably some kind of storage under the extension table of the TS. I’ve never had real tools like this, so this is a pretty exciting time.

Way to go, that is awesome!

Tools mean a heck-of-allot more when they come from your dad. I have a Stanley No. 5 my dad gave me 15 years ago. As the song says, “first million dollars takes it home”!
