Topic tags/keywords: question

I am looking to get a doweling jig for a project that I am working on. It is either this or the bead lock kit. Which one should I look at getting? I do not have tons of money. Would like to stay around $50 if possible. Tru M&T joints are out of the question right now.

I made my own, the first one out of oak, since then I have made several out of alum and steel for different drilling application’s none have ever cost me much money. before that I was giving one made by general, the one that has the little wheel on top with the different size bushings in it and it rides on two rails. it works ok, but the wheel thing moves a little, I seem to always use the ones I build in most cases.

I got this one from Rockler for about $60 including a bunch of dowel pins and I love the thing.

Grizzley has the same one as Charlie, with out the dowels for less than $40. I have one and it works real good. It also has the interchangeable guides.

I know Debbie like the DowelMax, but it is a bit more than that one.

Gary, a dowel joint may not be as strong as a traditional mortise and tenon, but for many applications it will serve the same purpose with much less time and effort.

What I dislike about dowel joints is how hard it is to get them lined up. I have drilled them before (without a jig), they look great, and then when you go to assemble it they are off just enough to prevent the joint from seating. Using a dowel jig would probably eliminate most of that.

Charlie M. has recommended a very good dowling jig. We used them in prison industries all the time.

God Bless

Take a look at the dowlmax site. They have conducted test of various joints using dowels, m&t and biscuits. Theyr is very little difference between M&T and dowels.

I looked at Dowelmax and had toi quickly leave there site. I knew they where pricey, but $279 is out of my reach. Maybe when I become famous like Debbie I can get one.

Yeah, Al…you have to remember Ms. Debbie gets HUGE fees for conducting all those shop inspections. She can afford it!

Yeah just knowing someone that has been in up there with the likes of Norm is cool. Now if we can figure out how to make some real money. :)

a little late.. but I made it :)
love the dowelmax … so easy to use and adjustable for lots of different uses and the two dowel sizes. And you have to watch their pressure tests. Fascinating.

and the cost? Well… all the kind words I get here at LJ make me richer than beyond any bank account :)
