Topic tags/keywords: question bandsaw

Hello. I have a new blade I bought, and while my cousin was using it to cut a large cylinder he turned the blade cought the wood and put a bend in the blade. It doesn’t have a dramatic kink in it, just a bend. But while it tracks on the saw, whenever the bent spot rides the wheel it moves foward on the wheel and then back to centre. I am wondering if there is a way to fix the blade so its still usable? Can I just counter bend the spot to try to remove it? Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I have a bent blade exactly as you say. So long as it stays inside the guides then – - – Use it any way.

I do, it cuts fine. I’s annoying, but it cuts fine.

If it doesn’t cut fine then, relegate it for use it for when you are cutting up scrap for the fireplace.

If it won’t stay inside the guides then, it is toast and fit only to be cut up and used for that Bowsaw you were planning on making.

You know that video where Tage Frid tells some interviewer from some wood working rag that they don’t manufacture the blades for his bow saw any more?
He makes them from band saw blades.
They are great for that.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll see how the blade works in the saw again. I think I may still be able to use it but like you said, perhaps only for rough work. And if its not usable, then I will use it for a bowsaw.

If it is toast there’s no reason not to try to unbend it.
What’s the worst that could happen? A stress crack and a snapped blade?
That’s a pretty harmless event. I’ve broken a lot of blades running band saws in machine shops over the years I was in the trade & Never had anything untoward happen. When they snap, they don’t come spooling out of the machine. They just stop. The wheels idle on, but the blade stops

True, thanks again for the help. I’ve only snapped one blade and it was at school, I remember being shocked but like you said nothing really happened.

The spring heaving the wheel upward makes a big bang
