I have a couple questions regarding dust collection / collectors. I recently bought a used 1hp dc, it is definitely an upgrade from the shop vac, but I was wondering are there any upgrades I could do to increase its performance, ie motor size, etc…

Also I have already upgraded to a .5 micron canister filter.

Thanks for the info

Carlos

Best addition to your DC would be aThein separator. The separator removes the bulk of the sawdust so large pieces don’t go thru the impeller on your DC. Also lessens the dust in your filter. Just google Thein separator or search here on LJ’s, you’ll find a lot of onfo.

Unfortunately, your options are somewhat limited. A 1hp DC is pretty much at the low end of the spectrum. Going to the 0.5 micron filter bag is a good thing, but it also reduces the flow rate thru the system. Going to a bigger motor probably wouldn’t help a lot since the impeller is what really provides the flow.

Rather than spend a lot of time and money trying to jack up the performance of yours, you would probably be better off to sell it and get a bigger DC. The Harbor Freight DC is very inexpensive and gets great reviews.

You mean to tell me my Delta 1 HP Dust Collector would be outperformed by a Harbor Freight Dust Collector.

like this:

My whole foundation is shaken, when Harbor Freight is better than Delta

I have not heard too many good things about the lower end Delta DC.

The HF DC is pretty well liked around LJ’s. It’s suppose to be a 2 hp, not likely, but still a good dust collector. You can get a 20% off coupon in some mags like Wood. I lucked out and got a Clearvue cyclone for about a 1/3 the price.

I don’t think it comes down to HF being better than Delta, a DC is very simple, a motor, impeller and bags for filtration/collection. The 2HP machine has a bigger motor (and most likely a bigger impeller to match), so it will move more air, and therefore more dust/chips, which is what you want from a DC. The machines are often near identical in construction so higher power=greater suction, simply put.
