I go to quite a few garage sales, flea markets, and auctions in search of old tools. One thing I have noticed over the years is the lack of any decent chisels. I have a nice collection of Stanley “Everlast” (#20 I think) chisels that I use regularly and really like them. Why is it that most of the sales will have a good selection of woodworking tools but rarely any chisels? I have been to estate auctions of some very good woodworkers and there will be all the tools you would find in any good shop, but there are never any chisels. Most of what I have found were at garage sales and the most I have paid for any of them was $8.00. I really enjoy the hunt but it does seem strange that chisels are so hard to find. Finding tools this way is not the fastest way to build a collection, but it is cheaper and half the fun is looking for them! And I do enjoy finding an expensive tool for dirt cheap because the person selling them had no clue to their worth.

Like Al said, try ebay.

Yep…knew Al would be the first post here. He has a chisel word alert set up. My problem is all chisels look the same. I need to know the difference between a butler and a swan.

I think its becourse most none woodworkers use them as preybars to open paintcans and beerbotles
and as screwdrivers
and the diy´s just know they need a set of cheisels not knowing the different from a fine benchcheisel
to a sashcheisel or a slick or pairing cheisel …. they are all being abused and tossed when too dull … :-(

Gotta agree. I got into hand tools less than a year ago. I actually found a nice stanley #1 for $12.50 ( not a typo, twelve dollars and fifty cents ) , but have yet to find a single vintage chisel.

Better luck to both of us.

Probably because so few folks see much need for them – or know how to use them.

Chisels usually show up in a shop after the person has passed the “wannabee” stage and is getting serious.
