Topic tags/keywords: finish advice question

Hey Jocks! Need some advice on finishing a record cabinet for the ol’ girl. It is made up of glued up aspen board panels from Menards. Construction is going great, that’s saying a lot for me, so I don’t want to screw up the finish. Don’t care about seeing to much grain and was thinking dark, as in a rich mahogany color. Tried Old Masters Wipe On and Deep Penatrating Red. Put on both and wiped them off. Even with multiple coats I am not satisfied. When I take a foam brush and just lay on the deep penatrating stain it is very opague
but close to matching the furniture in the room. Tried with sealer and without, not much difference.

Well, what do you all think? I am totally open to any ideas out there. Has anyone made a piece of furniture out of say, clear pine and stained to a dark color with good results? As always, I appreciate all the advice and comments I can get! Thanks, Jack.
