Topic tags/keywords: question lathe turning spindle shopsmith

Hi everyone, I finished my diy lathe a couple of weeks ago and did a small test turning an awl handle with good results but the 5/8” threaded rod used as spindle has a 0.3mm oscillation aprox., not bad I think but there’s room for improvement.

So, I’d like to replace this spindle with a proper made one and looking around seems like a good idea to replicate the way you can attach accessories to the shopsmith as I’m already using 5/8” pillow block bearings, and would be good to be able to use some of those accessories with my lathe.

The thing is I can’t find any info about the length of the protruding part of the spindle, can you help me with this please?

I’d have to measure mine (it’s not nearby at the moment), but the knurled knob is about 1/2” and the spindle is about 1 1/4”.

Bunkie’s correct – 1/2” and 1-1/4”

Thanks a lot bunkie and tsmccull!

With this info I can go with the metal lathe guy to get a nice spindle ;)
