I know this topic has beaten to death…. but I cannot find one that fits my situation. I have a dust collection system out of 4' PVC with individual tool drops throughout my shop. I recently got a supermax 2550 drum sander and it clogs my filter very quickly looking for a cheap easy fix my idea is to add a separate trash can at the tool and put either a cyclone or thien baffle on it, all my other tools do not clog the filter like the drum sander does so I am wanting to just isolate that tool on its own separator, just not sure if it would be more beneficial to spend more time and money on cyclone v thien baffle. thanks
Both separate well but a cyclone does so with less losses and a baffle with less of a space footprint. If you feel like you current setup has power to spare, the baffle will probably be fine so long as it is designed well. If you feel things are borderline you may want to go with a cyclone or maybe a dedicated collector for the drum sander. Any separator is going to introduce suction loss.
that's one of the reasons I want to just put it on the one tool that's giving me problems, its just a jet 1.5 hp dc, It works ok but could def use more suction in the new shop, I went from a 2 car garage to a 30×50 shop and kept the same dc for now
It depends on whether you'd rather buy something or build something. A Thein baffle is a pretty cheap and easy build while building a cyclone will take a lot more effort and you're probably better off to buy one.
I would add a separate collection unit to the sander, since you have a 30×50 shop. HF #31810 $155. or HF #57869 $210. or Grizzly #G8027 $245. Save a additional 20% with a 20% off coupon at HF, bring the cost to $120 or $165.
A Dust Deputy [DD] is far too small for this application. They are more suited to hand held sanders. He'd need a Super Dust Deputy [SDD] so he could run at least a four inch line.
The up side of the SDD is, just as with my DD, the efficiency of the system stays high much, much longer.
On a side note, I had your Jet before I swapped it for a four bagger. Mine had a cartridge and I'd clean it (paddles), but it didn't seem to do any good. I pulled the cartridge to see why and noticed a lot of dust that had knocked off the pleats landed on the disk between the upper and lower section. It was obvious the next time I fired it up all of that would pull back up and I'd be where I started, before cleaning the filter.
I began shaking the unit after cleanings and saw cup fulls of dust drop, and noted my cleaning efforts produced a night and day difference.
That is a big sander and will need the best dust collection possible to avoid fines in the air. I would get a dust deputy.
On the idea of adding a collector, I have three - two 3hp four baggers and an HF unit. This allows me to put one each big boy on each side of the shop and one dedicated to the miter [except when it's pretending to be my lawn vac, with the aid of the SDD).
One of the four baggers is, well, bags up and down. The other four bagger has canisters on top. Both were craigslist scores. One was $250.00 and the other $400.00 and they keep my shop in pretty good shape. Both are 3hp units.
