I have a 1000/6000 King stone, and while sharpening plane irons I noticed the middle of my irons not getting sharp. I also previously noticed irons not sharpening square. I have the generic $15 honing guide with oddly undersized “wheel”. after drying the stone and inspecting in the light, I can feel a slight groove in the 1000 side. I am wondering if its technique, or just the design of this wheel? Am I putting too much down pressure when sharpening or perhaps the wheel is wobbling a bit and going slightly on edge, as its hard to balance flat since so narrow?

Do you flattened your stones ever so often? If not, that will happen with any guide and even sharpening free hand.

That said, make sure you focus the pressure on the edge of the iron, not the wheel.

Have your say...
