Topic tags/keywords: tip

If you guys keep posting comments with member cr1 topics the Non-shop Talk is going to end up like the Coffee Lounge.

Maybe the administrators should look at the action of individuals and apply their admin powers to those actions in lieu of censoring the entire membership. Either way, the owners of this site, will decide what they are going to do with it. There is always the option of not looking at the off topic area.
I really can empathize with what you are saying, and I wouldn’t want to lose the off topic forum.
In polite conversation, politics doesn’t have to be the end all of ones life. For some folks it becomes an addiction to speaking ones one track mind.

Problem is that new members do not know how we all loved the Coffee Lounge and after losing it most LJ members were unhappy, we finally got this Non-Shop Talk Forum and I would say that most members want to keep it.

Here is the problem with off-topic forums and why many sites do not allow them.

It may appear to some that the site is free for all, but it is not. This is a business enterprise intended to make money through advertizing. Here is how it works:

Martin: I run this great site and I would love to advertize your product.
Potential Advertiser: What is the site about?
Martin: Its about woodworking. People exchange tips and skills and post their projects.
Potential Advertiser: Is this all?
Martin: No, they also spread political rumors, call each other names, and post pictures of political figures with photoshopped Hitleresque mustaches.
Potential Advertiser: No, thanks.
And off he goes to advertize on

This is not a public square, but a business establishment. If you walk into a bar with provocative political slogans, they might show you the exit rather quickly, and probably not buy your “don’t like it, don’t look at it” plea.

Now, this is up to the management to decide, but if non-shop talk is closed I will not blame them.

P.S. I liked Coffee Lounge the way it was long before it was closed. People sharing memories, pictures from travel and such.

I think I joined before the demise of the coffee shop, but just before it went away. I am a “new” member, and I would not want to lose the Non-Shop Talk Forum.

GMman…... you know how it is….... They come and they go…...... No name-calling necessary here from me … need to. Good thread though, GMman…..

I wholeheartedly agree with you GMman. Some of the current “discussions” seem more like the old coffee lounge than the old coffee lounge…some guys just can’t play nice…cue the whining about it being their “right” to say whatever they want, however they want…those that shout loudest about “rights” seem to forget the responsibilities that those rights entail….

It does say “their philosophies” in the description for this forum.
I’m mearly pointing that out, I’m not agreeing one way or the other.
I was here when the Coffee Lounge went down and yes I was very sorry to see it go and I certainly hope this forum doesn’t go that way either.

Non-shop talk is there for leisure, not arguements and bickering. Politics is definately one I wouldn’t recommend bringing up. Everyone has their own views and opinions so of course it will stir up the “coffee”. Good thread GM

I must have missed most of these. They’re so camouflaged that I kind of enter the off-topic threads at random. I use the pulse like a refresh; I’ll look at my watchlist first, if it’s dead, I’ll look at the “all” list; if nothing looks interesting, I’ll pick a random “off topic”. I’ve always used this site this way; I have no idea of the myriad other methods. I hope we don’t lose the non-shop-talk forum.

As one of the posters in the Solyndra discussion, I’m wondering why there is a problem. Every post so far has been reasonably stated with no insults or demeaning language.

Yes, this is a woodworking site, but have you ever been part of any group that limited discussion to group-related topics? Every place I’ve ever worked, and every organization I’ve ever been part of included “off-topic” discussions. Sports, politics, weather…... we talked (and sometimes argued) about it all.

My oh My, the Coffee Lounge Saga, Part II.
The “Off Topic” area is there as far as I am concerned is what Viktor stated. ”I liked Coffee Lounge the way it was long before it was closed. People sharing memories, pictures from travel and such.”

I view it as a place to take some respite out of the day/night and “sit down” with other LJ folks and “shoot the breeze”. However there are some topics that ALWAYS cause consternation and anger with everyone trying to get in the last word. For the majority of LJs these topics are not liked simply because they get out of hand. Any political topic is bound to stir up trouble with name calling and accusations, some people are highly charged on this subject and the topic becomes very boring and insane. Race and religion are two other topics that should be taboo on this site, but celebrations of a religious holiday or event is perfectly acceptable.
Personally I like to see the Off Topic area as a place where you can learn something that may or may not be directly connected to woodworking, a place to swap stories, a place for family talk, a place of support for injured or sick LJs, and above all else a place where humor can be found – a laugh a day is far better than an apple!
I would ask that those who see fit to do battle of ideologies in the Off Topic area, please, please cease and desist or you will ruin it for everyone.

Now for a nice cup off Coffee. :-)

I really haven’t been following much of the off-topic forum. I will say that I like the “hidden” titles. The titles tend to inflame the more sensitive types. I can give as good as anyone in an argument, but that is not why I come to LJs. The meltdown of the Coffee Lounge is something I’d not like to see repeated. That really only took a couple of people. Some people are just naturally argumentative. I’m not pointing at cr1, btw. We all know who the culprits were last time, if you were looking in here at the time. And cr1 wasn’t one of them.

Frankly, I can’t understand why, if a person doesn’t like a topic of discussion (political and religious top the list) they can’t just ignore the thread! Nobody is forcing your fingertips to type, or to move the mouse. If you go there and give it, expect to take it without complaint.

By the same token, no one here “has the right” to say whatever they want. As soon as they start paying the bills, yes, they have the right. But not until then. I see that disrespectful, etough (and sometimes unlawful) behavior all over the internet.

Roger – well said. I am waiting for cr1’s reply to GMman but I assume he/she is blocked.
