I’ve got a lathe which I haven’t used much, in fact most of my focus has been casework. However, with my piano-stool project underway, virtually every piece was to be produced on the lathe.
While sizing tenons on the ends of the spindles, I recalled a method of exactly measuring the tenon diameters using common open-end wrenches! By using the corresponding-size wrench as a calipers you’ll know when the diameter is right . It also seems to be less likely to ‘grab’ than a small calipers, and never goes out of adjustment!!

Yes, they do work good, but remember they are a little bit oversized.

Another good way is to drill a hole in a piece if wood the size you want and then cut it in half.
If you want a press fit then turn until it’s a press fit.

That’s real clever. Nice to know there is an option out there that doesn’t include buying a new tool to get exact measurements (those are so rare).

Thanks, Gary!
True, wrenches are a bit oversized. For this project I roughed up the tenons with some 36-grit sandpaper because I anticipated a lot of stress on the joints My trial fittings polished the tenons and I was concerned about penetration of the glue. I’m using polyurethane glue on this, my first time with it. Seems kind of weird, wetting the joints first with water!
Making a gauge out of wood is a great idea also! Thx!.

~DB,

An option for not buying a new tool. ARRRRGGHH!! I thought the moderators did a better job of screening for obscenities on this website. ;)

Norm Abrams has shown this on his show also. They are slightly larger than the measurement but this works well
