Once again it’s the time of year when I have to BEG members NOT to post spoilers in forum titles.

I was looking forward to watching Russia vs USA in the rugby world cup later today. I’ve been careful of which web sites I visit, I’ve staunchly been avoiding the news, but, there it is in the list of forum topics …

”USA beats Russia in RWC”

If people want to discuss the RWC, or other sporting events, please do NOT put the result in the title.

Thanks

I hate it when the weatherman on TV says that sunrise will be at 6:13 am. It always spoils the surprise for me. Sunset isn’t a problem. I always expect that to happen.

Interesting issue. If you’re a fan I suppose it’s important. I promise not to mention any rugby result. I went to a rugby match once. It’s sort of like a funny keystone cops version of football right? And the names. Hooker? Someone on the field was a hooker.

I don’t have any problem with discussions of the games etc etc – it’s only in the title of the topic that it’s a problem.
A forum topic called ”Russia vs USA RWC (contains spoilers)” would be great.
Once I’ve watched the match I’ll be there reading and/or commenting.

It’s sort of like a funny keystone cops version of football right?
lol. I think it’s more the other way around. And when you said “football” did you mean “football” or “soccer”?

KnickKnack – When you say football, do you mean American football or soccer that we Brits refer to as football? LOL – Doesn’t it all get confusing? :-)

American football?
The Americans have their own version of football?
Is it like English football but spelled wrongly, oops, I mean differently? :-)
Next you’re gonna tell me the SuperBowl is not a woodworking competition!

I agree that we shouldn’t put “spoilers” in the titles, but I never understood the premise of spoilers when it comes to a sporting event. I am a fan of the NFL, and golf, and I enjoy watching both. I will sometimes record an event and watch it, even when I know the final outcome. The journey in competition is what draws my interest not the ending so much.

Why? What’s it matter?

It’s just, imho, somewhat more exciting when, in those last final moments, you do not know whether Wilkinson is going to get that drop goal or not.

I agree 100% KnickKnack. I was looking at my facebook on sunday and accidentally spoiled the USA vs. Ireland result. I kind of figured our that Ireland would win anyhow, but it kills it when watching the match. However, the USA played inspired vs. Ireland and the match was still amazing to watch.

I do have to disagree with the keystone cop comment. It doesn’t offend me but I have played both American football and still play/coach rugby. Rugby looks like American football (remember American football developed from rugby) but is actually comparable to soccer or basketball. The inventer of basketball was a rugby player looking for a game to play indoors during the winter months. He figured if you dribbled the ball, there wouldn’t be a need for tackling. Rugby is a free flowing game with few actual stoppages. So, a rugger has to think and react more quickly than the average American football player.

I hope I don’t start a can of worms American Football vs Rugby debate. I love both having been a player and coach in both sports.

Addendum

My comments above were jokes… The one about rugby looking like the keystone cops. My daughter played rugby in college. We always had affectionate jokes about the game, names they used, and how it was played. In the USA we tend to make fun of anything that isn’t ‘American’. Heck we even think of the word America as the name of our country even though it’s a continent that includes our Canadian friends to the north and Latin and South America to the south. I think it stems from our center of the universe type of thinking. We’re even proud of it. Sad but true.

Anyway, I’m really into satire and hyperbole. I think it comes off better in person than in a blog. I do it all the time. Often placing my foot in my mouth in the process.

Now, how about those bald people. Are they smarter than other people or what!!!

Sorry Craftsman, I didn’t mean to sound bitter. I just have to hear the arguments alot. It is cool to see NBC working with USA rugby to show it more and make it more accessable to the public. For people who know rugby it is an exciting game. I love the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame. However, it gets hard to watch because it is so slow compared to rugby.

I think what turns people off is honestly not passing forward and line-outs. My Dad has only ever watched me play once. He said he was doing ok until we picked somebody up in the air.

I make my best attempt to be bald. I cut my hair down to the nub every two weeks. I wish it would just go away.
