I am new to pretty much everything in terms of woodworking skills and knowledge of hardwares abilities so I’m sorry if I’m asking something that should seem like common sense. I have just started to try and learn how to make guitars and I’m looking for a band saw that can cut through 4”+ of wood without major difficulties. I’m sure many of you know how strong a motor has to be to be able to handle this so if anyone could point me to a bandsaw that would fit my situtation I would be very grateful.

Look in the reviews section for different models.

Look at a 14” with at least a 1HP motor.

That’s all you need for guitar making.

Another thing I would add to Gary’s statement is to toss the blade that comes with the machine. These generally are not the best quality and replace it with a Timberwolf or Woodslicer blade(s). Comments on these have been posted in the review section.

Welcome. You have found the right place for woodworking. A great group of people willing to help. Looking forward to see your projects and comments. Type in guitar in the SEARCH box at the top of this page. Have fun and work safe in the shop and use pushsticks.

Gary’s got it right a 14” with at least 1HP, also look at quality and options (i.e. fence, guides, riser block, quick release, etc). Usually the more popular brands have the most options available and are the most popular for the reason they are well built. There are quite a number of brands available out there and lots of reviews as well. Depends on you budget and space available which will be best.

I agree a 14” would work. I have a smaller 10” bench-top and It would probably have a little bit of difficulty cuting a 4” slab.

Ok…. so after reading what you guys posted and taking in to consideration my financial position I was thinking of ordering this Grizzly bandsaw (link below). What do you guys think.

I just ordered a Grizzly G0555X; and will be happy to share my experience when it gets here. I looked around quite a bit, and like you, I’m pretty new at this stuff. I read some really good reviews of several different models here, but due to price and my basic needs; I went with the Grizzly.

I assume if you are cutting 4 inch boards for guitar making you are doing resawing thin slices. If that’s the case your blade and fence are just as important as your machine. A perfectly vertical fence and a good resaw blade with 3 tpi and a large hook angle make for best resawing.
