Topic tags/keywords: handsaw disston question

I need to get a new construction style handsaw, something like a Disston Number 7. I wanted another disston but cant seem to find anywhere to buy one new. So I’m looking for recommendations.

Who makes a good saw these days and where can I get one?

I’ve looked at the local big box stores and and was sorely disappointed by what they had to offer. I tried the Woodcrafts but they aren’t selling construction style saws.

I’d like to pick up a cross cut and a rip, something in the 26 inch range and maybe 12 tpi and 7’ish tpi.

thanks

Disston is still making saws, check out Menard’s. Depending on your location, most local lumberyards still have them available. Buck bro’s, Stanley, more. you might even find them on the web.

Are you sold on a new one? Disston saws are a fairly frequent offering on Ebay.

Talk to Steve Cooke over at Cooke’s Sharpening, he can hook you up with Disston saws. I just bought a couple from him and I’m very happy with them. Be sure to email him, he has many more saws than show on his web site.

Thanks for the infos.

It looks like Menards are all east of colorado and our box stores, HD and Lowes dont seem to carry Disston. I’ll ask around our smaller lumberyards and see if anyone can still get me one.

I checked ebay and that might be the best choice. Looks like quite a few older ones and one or two new condition older saws. I’ve earmark a couple and we’ll see how the bidding goes.

I checked cookes sharpening but it looks like their web site is in transition. Not a lot of saws available there today.

Thanks for the help, looks like I’ll be able to pick up a disston one place or another.

I would look for a used Disston. The only new saw maker I know of that is making high quality panel saws is Wenzloff & Sons

The Cookes web site has been in “transition” for some time. I would call them if your interested. They also sell on ebay from time to time.
