Topic tags/keywords: maple lathe question turning finishing

I recently found some wormy manzanita and inlaid turquiose into the voids. They turned out nice.
Now I want to turn curly and birdseye maple pens. My past foray into maple wasnt very succesfull. I ended up with a very bland looking pen. I heard someone say dyeing figured woods with aniline makes the color pop. Anyone used this technique on turned work?
